Tour Divide 2024 — Solo Across the Rockies
A 2,700 km solo bikepacking journey down the spine of the Rocky Mountains. Here's what I learned.
The Tour Divide is one of the most iconic bikepacking routes in North America. Starting from Banff, Alberta, and finishing in Antelope Wells, New Mexico, this 2,700 km route follows the spine of the Rocky Mountains through some of the most remote and beautiful terrain on the continent.
I decided to tackle it solo in the summer of 2024. No support crew, no fixed schedule — just me, my bike, and whatever the mountains threw at me. The preparation took six months. The ride took 28 days. The recovery took considerably longer.
The first week was the hardest. Montana's relentless climbs, unpredictable weather, and the psychological weight of 2,400 km still ahead tested everything I had. By day 10, somewhere in Wyoming, something shifted. The rhythm took over. Wake, ride, eat, sleep. Repeat.
Colorado was the highlight — technically demanding, visually stunning, and with just enough civilization to resupply without losing the wilderness feel. New Mexico was a different beast: heat, headwinds, and the long flat drag to the border that breaks riders who've made it this far.
What I'd tell anyone considering the Divide: your gear matters less than your mindset. Pack light, ride your own pace, and don't underestimate the emotional toll of riding alone for weeks. But also — don't overestimate it. You're more capable than you think.
