From the People Who Rode It

BikepackHub's Japan guide was the single most useful thing I read before my Hokkaido trip. The convenience store resupply strategy alone saved the ride on day 4 when I was 80km from any town.

I used the Tour Divide gear list as my starting point and it was spot-on. Cut 2kg off my setup compared to what I had before. Finished 4 days faster than my target time.

The Kyrgyzstan route notes were written by someone who actually suffered through those passes. Not marketing copy. The warning about the Ala-Bel descent in wet conditions was exactly right.

FAQ

Common Questions

Any bike with mounts for bags will work. A gravel bike is ideal — versatile enough for mixed terrain, efficient on tarmac, and capable off-road. You don't need a dedicated bikepacking bike to start. Ride what you have, add bags, go.
A functional starter setup (bags, shelter, sleeping system, navigation) runs $800–$1,500. An ultralight performance setup runs $3,000–$6,000. The good news: you can rent gear for your first trip, which we strongly recommend before buying everything.
If you can ride 60–80km comfortably in a day, you're ready for a beginner bikepacking trip. Most multi-day routes average 80–120km/day. Your fitness will improve dramatically after day 3 of any trip.
Japan, Portugal, and New Zealand top our list for first-timers. All three have excellent infrastructure, bike-friendly culture, and scenery that rewards the effort immediately. Avoid Kyrgyzstan or remote routes until you have at least two completed trips under your belt.
Route planning is everything. Our route guides include resupply points with distances, water source locations, and notes on reliability by season. In remote areas, a Sawyer Squeeze filter ($35) and a 3L capacity means you can go 60km between water sources.
