Overview

Iceland's interior Highlands are only accessible for 8–10 weeks per year, and only by those willing to ford glacial rivers, push through volcanic ash fields, and endure 24-hour daylight. The reward is a landscape that looks like another planet — black lava deserts, turquoise glacial lakes, and geothermal fields that let you hot-pot after a hard day.

Lava fields, glacial rivers, and geothermal steam vents. The Highlands are only accessible in summer — and only by those willing to push through river crossings.

Rider Tips

  • River crossings are the biggest hazard — scout carefully, never cross alone, and use trekking poles.
  • Weather can change from sunshine to blizzard in 20 minutes — always carry full winter kit.
  • Camping is free in the Highlands but you must be entirely self-sufficient.
  • Midnight sun means you can ride at 2am — use it to avoid afternoon wind storms.
