Overview

Scotland's Land Reform Act gives cyclists the legal right to camp anywhere on open land — a freedom almost unique in the world. The Northwest Highlands are among Europe's last true wildernesses, with ancient Caledonian pine forests, sea lochs, and single-track roads shared only with red deer. The whisky distillery network provides the world's most civilised resupply system.

The right to roam means camp anywhere. Whisky distilleries as resupply points. The Cairngorms and Northwest Highlands offer some of Europe's finest wild riding.

Rider Tips

  • Midges (tiny biting insects) are worst in June–August in still, humid conditions — carry a head net.
  • The right to roam is a legal right but comes with responsibilities — leave no trace, close all gates.
  • Weather is famously unpredictable — pack for all four seasons regardless of the forecast.
  • Whisky distilleries often have visitor centres with food, water, and very friendly staff.
