Overview

Portugal punches well above its weight as a bikepacking destination. The Alentejo's rolling cork oak plains, the Algarve's dramatic sea cliffs, and the Douro Valley's terraced vineyards offer completely different riding within a small country. Low costs, warm weather, and exceptional food make it the perfect European introduction to bikepacking.

Atlantic coast cliffs, ancient cork forests, and cheap pastel de nata at every village café. Europe's most underrated bikepacking country.

Rider Tips

  • Pastelarias (pastry shops) open at 7am — the perfect breakfast stop before the heat builds.
  • Summer (Jun–Aug) is too hot for comfortable riding in the south — stick to spring and autumn.
  • Wild camping is technically illegal but widely tolerated in remote areas with leave-no-trace practice.
  • The Alentejo has very few shade trees — start early and take a long siesta break.
